One of my favorite parts of the whole photography experience is gallery delivery day.
You open that email, start scrolling, and suddenly you’re right back in the moment — the laughter, the hugs, the little expressions you didn’t even realize I caught.
And then you download your images.
At that point something important happens.
Those photographs become yours to protect.
And friends, here’s the honest truth… a lot of people unintentionally lose their photos over time. Phones get replaced, computers crash, gallery links expire, passwords get forgotten. It happens more often than you’d think.
So I always like to share a few simple ways to keep your portraits safe for years to come.
Because these images aren’t just files sitting on a computer.
They’re little pieces of your family story.

Download Your Images Right Away
As soon as your gallery arrives, go ahead and download the full-resolution files.
Even if you don’t plan to print or share them right away, having them safely saved means they’re always yours.
A small tip that helps a lot later on:
Create a folder on your computer labeled with the year and the session name.
Something simple like:
2026 – The Johnson Family Portraits
Future you will be very grateful when you’re looking for photos five years from now.
Trust me on that one.
Follow the “Three Copy” Rule
Photographers have a pretty simple rule when it comes to protecting images.
Always keep three copies.
A really easy system looks like this:
• One copy on your computer
• One copy on an external hard drive
• One copy stored in the cloud
Cloud services like Google Drive, Dropbox, or Apple iCloud make this super easy and help protect your photos if a computer ever crashes.
It takes just a few minutes and gives you a lot of peace of mind.
Don’t Store Photos Only on Your Phone
Phones are amazing for sharing photos and looking through memories.
But they are not great long-term storage systems.
Phones get upgraded, replaced, dropped in pools, wiped during updates… all the things.
Your phone should be a place you enjoy looking at your photos, not the only place they live.
Keep Your Full Resolution Files
When you download your gallery, those files are the highest quality versions of your portraits.
Social media compresses images quite a bit, so the originals are the ones you’ll want saved safely for things like:
• prints
• albums
• wall art
• future sharing
Those full-resolution files are the best version of your images.

Print Your Favorites
Digital files are wonderful, truly.
But printed photographs are where memories really start to live.
Think about it — the photos we still have from our grandparents’ generation are the ones that were printed and tucked into albums or frames.
Consider printing:
• a framed portrait for your home
• a small album from your session
• prints for grandparents or family
Because at the end of the day…
photos deserve to be seen, not just stored.
A Final Thought
Technology will always keep changing.
Phones will change.
Computers will change.
Storage systems will change.
But photographs have a beautiful way of carrying stories forward.
Taking a few minutes now to protect them means your family will be able to enjoy those memories for years and years to come.
And honestly… that makes my heart really happy.

Need Help Printing Your Photos?
If you’re one of my clients and you’re not sure what to do next with your images — please know you’re never on your own.
I’m always happy to help families decide what to print, how large to go, or where a portrait might look best in your home.
Sometimes all it takes is a quick message and a photo of your wall, and we can figure it out together.
Because these portraits deserve more than sitting in a folder somewhere.
They deserve to be enjoyed.
And helping families turn their photographs into something they can see every day is honestly one of my favorite parts of this work.
