Hello friend! Thank you for stopping by and reading about ME! My name is Katrina Hecksher-Jones, you can call me Kat. I am the owner and photographer behind Kat Jones Creative!

hey there, I'm Kat!

Lauren and Eric knew from the beginning that they didn’t want a traditional wedding day. Instead, they planned a day that felt like a true reflection of their relationship: an intimate vow exchange surrounded by their closest family and friends at Libby Hill Park in Richmond, Virginia.

Their wedding day was the culmination of a love story that started unexpectedly. While living in Portugal, Lauren was visiting her mom in Richmond when she decided to give online dating one more chance. After an evening of scrolling through Hinge, one profile stood out from the rest: Eric. A simple compliment turned into a conversation, a first date, and eventually a relationship that would lead them home to Richmond to exchange vows surrounded by the people they love most.

Located in the heart of Church Hill, Libby Hill Park provided the perfect backdrop for their ceremony with its historic charm and city views while being tucked away from the bustle of downtown Richmond. As a longtime Church Hill resident, Eric spent countless afternoons exploring Richmond’s parks and sharing moments with Lauren overlooking the city. For a couple planning a second marriage, Libby Hill Park represented exactly what they wanted their wedding day to feel like: simple, meaningful, beautiful, and only focused on what mattered most.

The weather kept us guessing throughout the day. Strong winds moved through the park as the florist worked to prepare the ceremony space around the fountain. The floral installation, filled with lush greenery and soft blooms, required a little extra creativity to stay in place, but by the time guests arrived, everything was ready (thanks to a scavenged brick, lots of tape and some prayers).

As family and friends gathered, Eric waited at the ceremony site. There was anticipation in the air, that familiar mix of excitement and nerves that comes right before something important. Eric felt a bit reserved and was hard to read. In the meantime, we spent this time capturing portraits of the wedding party, candid moments between guests, and of course, plenty of photos of Cosmo, their adorable black lab.

According to Lauren, Cosmo has been a constant source of healing and growth throughout her life, and watching him become part of Eric’s world was one of the clearest signs that their relationship was something special. Including him in the ceremony felt less like a wedding detail and more like honoring a member of the family.

Suddenly, it was time for everyone to get into position and for Lauren to walk down the canopied stairway turned wedding aisle, elbow linked with her proud father. As soon as Lauren started to approach Eric, his energy completely shifted. His heart seemed to just open and his eyes had a different sparkle to them than they did before. Their connection and chemistry, once they stood facing each other, began to radiate through the entire park.

The wind was undoubtedly still there, lightly splashing the fountain water onto the couple. To anyone else, this might have felt like a disaster, but Lauren and Eric were completely unbothered. They embraced it for the romantic touch it was. Their nonchalance about the whole thing—and I hope this isn’t a reach—felt like a prophetic ode to their relationship: letting love be easy, despite all the inconveniences and imperfections.

Lauren’s sister, a bold and bright human, was the officiant. Her father, the official IPhone videographer. Her mother, her emotional cheerleader. Eric’s mother was the graceful dog keeper. Their friends, most of whom in seemingly just as loving relationships, were their forcefield. The couple was surrounded by people incontestably rooting for them, and you could feel it.

Lauren commenced the exchange with alluringly soulful poetry. Her words brought tears to everyone’s eyes (including mine) and her delivery made her love visible. At one point, she paused to say she had finally found a man just as good as her father—which I could tell was rare, even just from the small interactions we had. Eric’s vows perfectly complimented her’s and was an honest declaration of his love and commitment to Lauren. Both of their words spoke louder than any performance or large wedding could.

As they were sharing their vows, I couldn’t help but notice how magnetic their connection felt. They have the kind of eye contact where somehow their hearts are looking into each other too. And their kiss! It’s like they suddenly forgot they were being watched, and they let their love be the only spectator.

The ceremony came to an end and the wedding party was off to the reception dinner at Conejo. We stole the couple for a little longer to capture some bride and groom portraits. With Richmond’s skyline in the distance and the late afternoon light breaking through the clouds, the setting couldn’t have been more fitting. Just as their love, they were so easy. They needed very little direction as their connection spoke for itself.

The couple chose Conejo for a reason beyond the incredible food. Having both grown up in Southern California, sharing great Mexican cuisine with their closest family and friends felt like bringing a piece of home into their Richmond wedding celebration. Lauren later described looking around the dinner table, seeing everyone laughing and engaged in conversation, and realizing it was exactly what they had hoped their wedding day would be—a gathering centered around connection rather than production.

It was time to say our goodbyes, so we exchanged a few gifts. We gave them a little polaroid album we had secretly been curating throughout the ceremony and they graciously let us take home some of the famously resilient floral arrangements. They also ended up taking home the brick that held it all together as a memento—here’s to staying grounded despite the wind!

Lauren and Eric, thank you for trusting us to document your intimate Richmond wedding. It was an honor to witness and capture such a meaningful celebration.

Planning an Intimate Wedding or Elopement in Richmond, Virginia?

At Kat Jones Creative, we believe wedding photography should preserve more than how your day looked—it should preserve how it felt. Our approach is rooted in honest storytelling, artistic imagery, and creating a space where couples can be fully themselves.

As Lauren shared after receiving her gallery:

“Our pictures didn’t just capture one day, you see. It captured childhood hopes. It captured my most treasured people in this life. It gave me respite from all the noise going on in our world right now. Eric and I felt like our most beautiful, silly, natural selves and we have Kat to thank for giving us now a permanent reminder to pause and appreciate those beautiful, still moments.”

Lauren

Those are the moments we’re after.

If you’re planning a Richmond wedding, Virginia elopement, or intimate celebration and are looking for photography that feels authentic, emotional, and timeless, we’d love to hear your story.
