Hello friend! Thank you for stopping by and reading about ME! My name is Katrina Hecksher-Jones, you can call me Kat. I am the owner and photographer behind Kat Jones Creative!

hey there, I'm Kat!

If you’ve been searching for a photography studio in Richmond, Virginia for professional portraits, you may not realize that I offer a private studio space designed specifically for portraits and headshots!

The studio is a calm, comfortable environment where portraits can be created with intention — without the distractions of busy locations, weather changes, or rushed sessions.

Whether you’re coming in for professional headshots, senior portraits, family photos, or fine art portraiture, the studio gives us a place to slow down, collaborate, and create images that truly feel like you.

A Portrait Studio Designed for Real People

Many people feel nervous about being photographed — and that’s completely normal.

The Kat Jones Creative studio experience was designed to make the process feel simple and relaxed. Instead of walking into a loud or high-pressure environment, you’ll step into a quiet, welcoming portrait studio where you can take your time and settle in.

You don’t need to arrive knowing how to pose or what to do. Guidance is part of the experience. Throughout the session, you’ll receive clear direction and subtle adjustments so everything feels natural rather than forced.

Sessions are intentionally unhurried. We take the time to review images together as we go so you can see how things are coming together and feel confident about the portraits we’re creating.

Portrait Photography Services Offered in the Studio

The studio is used for a wide variety of portrait sessions. Some clients arrive knowing exactly what they need, while others simply know they want meaningful photographs created in a professional space.

Headshots & Branding Photography

Professional headshots are one of the most common sessions held in the studio. These sessions are perfect for:

  • Business professionals
  • Entrepreneurs and small business owners
  • LinkedIn profiles
  • Company team headshots
  • Personal branding photography

Studio lighting allows us to create clean, polished headshots that feel modern and professional while still feeling natural and approachable.

Fine Art Portraits

Fine art portrait sessions focus on creating timeless, expressive images that feel more like artwork than traditional photographs.

These sessions often include intentional lighting, thoughtful posing, and a slower pace that allows us to craft portraits with depth and character.

Many families choose fine art portraits as statement pieces for their homes or heirloom artwork to pass down through generations.

Senior Formal Portraits

Many high schools require a formal senior portrait for the yearbook — the classic drape or tux image typically taken during a short photo day at school.

In the studio, seniors have a full session instead of just a few minutes. This allows time to get comfortable, take multiple portraits, and choose the image they like best. We will then submit the photo you choose to your yearbook!

Because the session is more relaxed, seniors can also choose additional images from the session if they’d like more than one portrait to remember the moment.

Heirloom Portraits

Heirloom portraits are designed to be timeless photographs of children and families that never go out of style.

These portraits often focus on simple clothing, classic backgrounds, and soft lighting so the attention stays where it belongs — on the people in the image.

Many families display these portraits in their homes and continue the tradition as their children grow.

Family Portrait Sessions

While outdoor family sessions are always popular, the studio offers a wonderful option for families who prefer:

  • A comfortable indoor setting
  • A more classic portrait style
  • A relaxed environment for younger children
  • Fine Art portraiture

The studio setting allows us to focus on connection, expression, and storytelling without distractions.

Not Your Typical Photography Studio

Some studios feel overly staged or intimidating.

The goal here is the opposite.

This space was created to feel comfortable, thoughtful, and collaborative — a place where portraits happen naturally rather than feeling overly produced.

Yes, it’s a professional photography studio.
But more importantly, it’s where ideas come to life.

Clients come in for everything from professional headshots to creative portrait sessions, and many times we end up exploring something entirely new together.

Because great portraits don’t always come from a rigid plan — sometimes they come from curiosity and a little creativity.

For couples getting married at The Estate at Independence, the studio location is especially convenient. Are studio portraits better than outdoor portraits?

Studio portraits offer several advantages. Lighting is fully controlled, sessions are not affected by weather, and the environment is quieter and more private. This makes studio photography especially ideal for headshots, fine art portraits, and heirloom portraits.

Outdoor sessions are still a great option for clients who prefer natural settings, and many portrait sessions can include both!

Do I need to know how to pose for a studio portrait session?

Not at all. Most clients arrive feeling unsure about posing. During the session, I will provide clear guidance and direction so you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

The goal is for portraits to feel natural rather than stiff or forced.

Who typically books studio portrait sessions?

Studio sessions are popular with (but not limited to):

• Business professionals needing headshots and/or branding photography
• Families wanting timeless portraits
• High school seniors needing yearbook formal portraits
• Parents booking heirloom portraits for their children
• Individuals interested in fine art portraiture

What can I expect when I show up to the studio?

Before our session, I will send you a detailed guide on how to back to the studio (it can be tricky for first timers).

Once you arrive, we will have a little time to get settled—we have tea, water, snacks, and a private getting ready area to change and do final touch ups if needed.

Once our session starts, I will help guide you in posing and check in along the way to make sure you’re comfortable.

Then, we take a quick look at the images together. We’ll see what you’re loving and what you’re not, if we need to redirect to capture your vision, we will! Our goal is that you will always leave the studio feeling like your best self was represented.
