What’s the Difference and Which One is Right for You?
Let’s talk about photo sessions! You’ve decided it’s time for some updated photos (yay!), and now you’re stuck wondering: Should I book a mini session or go all-in with a full session? I get this question all the time, so I’m here to break it down in the most fun and practical way. Plus, I’ll sprinkle in some personal stories to help you figure out what fits your needs.
Spoiler alert: There’s no wrong answer—just different kinds of awesome.
What’s a Mini Session?
Think of mini sessions like a power snack—quick, packed with goodness, and totally satisfying if you’re short on time. These sessions are usually 15–20 minutes at a specific location with a pre-planned setup or theme.
Here’s a story: Last fall, I hosted mini sessions at Amber Grove, with barns, golden light, and the cutest tree swing. Families popped in for 20 minutes, and we captured all the cozy, fall magic. The best part? We were done before the kids had time to decide they were over it. IYKYK!

Mini Session Highlights:
- Fast & Fun: Perfect for busy families or anyone who just wants a few great photos without a long commitment.
- Set Location & Theme: I plan everything in advance, from the spot to the vibe. Think holiday setups, golden-hour fields, or fall leaves.
- Short & Sweet Gallery: You’ll get a small collection of my absolute favorite shots (usually 20-30 beautiful proof). You will chose your favorite images to edit.
- Budget-Friendly: Mini sessions are a great way to get professional photos at a lower price point.
When Mini Sessions Make Sense:
- You want seasonal family photos (hello, holiday cards!)
- You need a quick update for milestone moments (birthday photos, anyone?)
- You’re a little camera-shy and prefer to ease in
What’s a Full Session?
A full session is the VIP treatment—it’s like a three-course meal with dessert. These sessions are fully customized, giving us the time and freedom to capture your story exactly how you envision it.
Take, for example, Katrina’s senior session at Belle Isle. We ended by the James River at sunset, explored a few locations, and even included her dog (because YES to dogs at sessions!). We had time for outfit changes and to get to all our favorite places downtown Richmond! There is also options to add on locations with a full session!

Full Session Highlights:
- Plenty of Time: Sessions usually last one to two hours, giving us time to get creative and relaxed.
- Fully Personalized: Want multiple outfits, locations, or to bring your pet? Let’s do it!
- Pre-Session Consult & Styling Support: We’ll chat ahead of time to plan the details, so you feel confident and prepared. You’ll get a Location Guide and a What to Wear Guide with tips for looking your best!
- Larger Gallery: You’ll receive a full set of images—perfect for telling your story, creating an album, or filling your walls with memories.
- Beautiful Prints & Products: Full sessions come with packages that include prints, wall art, and signature albums—because your photos deserve to live off your phone and on your walls!
When Full Sessions Make Sense:
- You want a relaxed experience with plenty of time
- It’s a big life moment—senior portraits, an engagement, or a family milestone
- You’re dreaming of multiple outfits and locations
- You want ALL the images (and some gorgeous products to display them!)
So, Which One Should You Choose?
If you’re looking for a quick, low-pressure way to get a few beautiful photos, mini sessions are perfect. But if you’re dreaming of a fully customized experience with lots of variety, styling help, and access to high-end products like wall art and albums, a full session is your best bet.
Either way, you’ll get gorgeous, heartfelt images that you’ll love forever. That’s my goal—whether we’re chasing golden light for 15 minutes or an hour and a half!
Still not sure? Let’s chat! I’m happy to help you figure it out.
