Why Every Couple Needs a First Look Before the Ceremony

When it comes to wedding day traditions, one moment stands out to me above any of the others: The first look! This is such an intimate, and emotional moment where the couple sees each other for the first time before the ceremony. This is such a great way to capture the raw reaction from the couple, and this moment can make such great photos. The first look is becoming more and more popular—and for good reason!

If you’re on the fence about whether a first look is right for you, here are some reasons why I believe every couple should consider it.

It Eases Pre-Ceremony Nerves

Weddings are exciting but also nerve-wracking. Many couples feel anxious leading up to the ceremony, especially when they know they’ll be walking down the aisle in front of everyone they know. A first look gives you the opportunity to share a quiet, intimate moment with your partner before the busyness of the day takes over. It’s a way to see each other in a more relaxed setting and calm any jitters you might have. A first look is such a great way to calm the nerves and have some alone time with your partner before your special day starts.

It Gives You More Time for Portraits

One of the biggest advantages of doing a first look is that it gives you time to capture beautiful portraits before the ceremony. Typically, couples wait until after the ceremony to take wedding photos, but this can sometimes lead to a rushed portrait session or missing out on the golden hour light. By scheduling a first look, you can take a good chunk of your formal portraits beforehand—leaving more time to celebrate and enjoy your reception.

It’s a More Intimate Moment

For many couples, the first look is the most emotional and intimate moment of the entire day. You get to experience the joy, excitement, and pure emotion of seeing each other for the first time with just the two of you! Some couples even take the first look opportunity to intimately share their vows. I think this is such an amazing idea to have those sacred words be read to just the two of you. Whether you’re both smiling through tears or sharing your vows intimately, this is a moment you’ll never forget. Plus, as a photographer, it’s a moment I absolutely LOVE to capture. It’s raw, it’s beautiful, and it’s something that’s uniquely yours.

It Helps Your Photographer Capture Better Shots

First looks are an absolute dream for photographers! Without the pressure of a full ceremony or the crowds of guests watching, I can focus on taking photos from different angles and really capturing the emotions of the moment. You’ll get gorgeous, emotional images of your first look that you can cherish forever.

It’s the Perfect Opportunity for a Private Moment

Sometimes, weddings can feel like a whirlwind of activity. There’s so much going on with guests arriving, the ceremony starting, and everything in between. A first look offers you a private moment to focus solely on each other—no distractions, no interruptions. It’s just the two of you, getting ready to start a new chapter of your lives together.

This can be a great time to exchange a quiet word, share a laugh, or simply enjoy each other’s presence before your special day officially starts! Your wedding day is all about you and your partner! If you’re considering it, I’d say go for it—it’s a moment you’ll never forget, and your photos will reflect the love and joy of that special time.

If a first look is something you think you would like to do then it is important to speak to your photographer to make sure that time will be available. I’d love to help you create memories that will last a lifetime!
