What to Wear for a Fall Photography Session:

Happy Fall! šŸ

In my opinion, it truly is the best time of year. The changing of the leaves, the crisp, cool air, and donā€™t even get me started on pumpkin spice lattes! When it comes to fall, three things come to mind: dressing comfy (but making it stylish), enjoying the cooler weather, and savoring the smell of happiness in the air (can you tell fall is my favorite).

The other thing that comes to mind when I think of fall is fall photoshoots! With the leaves changing to red and orange, it makes for such a perfect backdrop for a fall session. Whether you are gearing up for family portraits, or senior pictures, the number one question that comes to mind is ā€œWhat do I wear?ā€. Here is your ultimate guide to dressing for fall photos, to make sure you capture the seasonā€™s beauty while staying both stylish and comfortable. What you wear, and being comfortable in it, is a key part to getting the perfect session!

1. Embrace Fall Colors

When I think of fall colors I think of warm, earthy tones like deep oranges, mustard yellows, maroons, and greens. Think of the Folklore and Evermore albums by Taylor Swift. The moody vibe of those albums reminds me of forest greens, knee high boots, and of course your favorite cardigan. These fall colors add a warmth and vibrancy to your photos, and they will also match the fall landscape. Following the neutral tones is a great way to make sure you flow with the fall natural color scheme.

2. Layer Up

Layers are your best friend in fall photography sessions. They add depth to your outfit and allow for easy adjustments if the weather changes. Iā€™m thinking of a cozy sweater, a chunky scarf, or a jacket. You could spice it up with a jean jacket, flannel, or even a turtleneck under a sweater vest. Layers also allow you to switch up your outfit without having to change it completely. Itā€™s almost like you get two outfits in one!

3. Textured Fabrics

Texture can elevate your look and add visual interest to your photos. When I think of textured fabrics my mind immediately goes to knitted sweaters, corduroy pants, and suede boots. These textures stand out against the smooth, colorful fall leaves, adding a nice touch to your photos. Textures can also make your photos pop and they are so much fun to play around with!

5. Coordinate, Donā€™t Match

If youā€™re photographing with others, such as family portraits, aim for coordinated outfits rather than matching ones. Choose a color scheme that complements each other and blends with the setting around you. For example, if one person wears a maroon sweater, others can wear outfits with similar tones like navy or mustard.

6. Accessorize!

Accessories can add a personal touch to your look. A hat, statement necklace, or a cozy blanket scarf can be perfect additions. I am a huge lover of a good hat, I feel like it can tie together a look with minimum effort. Keep it simple and avoid anything too flashy that might take attention away from the overall look of your photos.

7. Location

When dressing for a photo session, consider the location of your shoot. If you’re in front of a forest with red and orange trees, avoid wearing those colors to prevent blending in. Instead, go for earthy and neutral tones like tans, browns, maroon, or navy. Always think about how your outfit contrasts with the background to make sure you stand out and remain the focal point of the session!

8. Have fun!

The best part of your session is letting loose and enjoying yourself. Whether itā€™s bringing along your pets, spinning your child around, laughing with loved ones, or tossing fall leaves into the air, let your personality shine! This is your session, so make it about you and what makes you happy. I love capturing those genuine, joyful moments that truly reflect who you are!

Hereā€™s to a fun, fabulous, and unforgettable fall! I canā€™t wait to capture these special moments for you.
